Kevin Kline To Run The Modesto Maration

kevinklineModesto sure can make a great impression on it’s visitors. Such was the case with Houston radio personality, Kevin Kline.

Kevin came out for our annual Movie Night. We were screening a documentary, Dear Chelsey, about his quest to run across Texas to honor 13 children who lost their battle with cancer.

During his visit, Kevin ran a 20 mile training run with Teens Run Modesto and our adult training group.

The experience must have been a memorable one, because Kevin and his wife, Trish, are flying out for Modesto Marathon.

Running for Andrewsnowdrop

Finding a cure for pediatric cancer is a passion for the Kline family. Their non-profit organization, the Snowdrop Foundation, works to raise funds for cancer research.

After Movie Night, Kevin got a chance to hear the story of Andrew Santana, son of Jesse and Ernestina Santana. Andrew lost is fight against cancer at the young age of 15. Many of you may be familiar with Andrew as a local 5K race is held in Modesto in his honor (Andrew’s Run).

Kevin has decided to run the Modesto Marathon to honor the memory of Andrew.

Please help us to extend a warm Modesto welcome to the Kline’s during their visit.

Big Changes at the Finish

Finish-Line-Map This year’s Modesto Marathon has seen major changes in the course. One of the reasons for the change is to create more of a festival atmosphere at the finish line. In past year’s, the race started and finished at the same place. Due to how confined that area is, it forced us to put the entertainment, food and other services away from the finish line. That all changes for the 2013 race. We’ve moved the finish line to a wide open area a couple blocks away from the start. Now, you can cheer on your favorite runners while listening to our great line-up of entertainment. Even more reason to bring the entire family to support the runner in your life. [download id=”14″]

An Interview with Dr. Calvin Lee

calvinWhile recording his recent radio spot for the Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon, Dr. Lee was asked for an interview.

A bit surprised by the request, I’m sure, Dr. Lee gave a great retelling of his and Dr. Wu’s long relationship with our race.

So great to here our history from the perspective of our title sponsor.

How far we’ve come!

Records and Winners

jonolsen2011

So far, two of our past marathon winners have committed to running the 2013 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. Modestan Jon Olsen will be trying for his third victory in four years in preparation for running in the World 24-Hour competition in Holland later this year. Michelle Meyer, who is attending medical school in San Francisco, will be back to attempt to break her 2011 course record. Meyer went on to qualify for the Olympic Trials after using SAMM in her training that year!

Half marathon winners will receive $250, and another $250 for setting course records; while 5K victors will receive $100 and a $100 bonus for setting a new record.

January Volunteer Drawing

Happy New Year!

We are a little behind in congratulating our two winners for our January volunteer drawing. Dan Duarte and Suzanne Abid are the lucky winners. They each won a Modesto Marathon duffle bag, t-shirt and hat!

Hurry and sign-up to volunteer for this year’s marathon and you could be the next big winner. Our next drawing will be in a couple weeks for February. I’m excited to find out what the next prize will be.

If you are running or walking the marathon, don’t fret – you can still volunteer to help. We have volunteer opportunities weeks before the marathon to help stuff goody bags and put together lanyards. We also need a lot of help the day before the race at the Expo in downtown Modesto at the Centre Plaza.

The sense of community that comes from helping put on the marathon is priceless.

Thanks and I hope you are the next lucky volunteer that gets an email from me with “Congratulations” in the subject line!

Official SAMM Keychain

keychain

We asked runners of the 2012 Modesto Marathon what they wanted to see in 2013.

What we heard, “MORE SWAG!”

To satisfy your craving for race swag, we proudly introduce the official SAMM keychain.

These keychains are going to half marathon and 5K participants.

Register early to make sure you get yours before they run out.

SAMM Hits The Radio

Seems that the Modesto Marathon is getting so big that it is everywhere. The latest place our team has invaded are the radio waves in the Central Valley.

Have you heard our promo on Clear Channel stations? If not, here it is:

New Location for Saturday’s Training Run

Getting bored of running every weekend in Dry Creek Park? Ready for a change of scenery? We got you covered.

For this weekend’s 18 mile training run, we are heading back out to Oakdale. Going a route very similar to the Flat Arch Run we did at the end of December.

Location

This time, we aren’t starting from the barn, though. We will be meeting on Frankenheimer Road (same road as the barn is on).

The meeting area is along the road and doesn’t have an exact address, so put 9720 Frankenheimer Road, Oakdale into your GPS for a close location.

Time

We will start at our usual time of 7:45.

The Route

Mike Araiza planned out a great run for us and the Teens Run Modesto program. It keeps us off major roads to make for a quiet, uneventful run.

Check out the course on the USATF website.

Aid

We will have aid stations on the course, but it is still very important that you bring your own water/sports drinks and energy fuel (GU, gel, etc.).

Unlike the marathon that will have aid stations placed every 2 miles, we don’t have the volunteers to staff that many stations for this training run.

18 miles is a long distance. You will need to hydrate and refuel more frequently than our aid stations will provide. Bring a water belt and pack GU.

Respecting the Route

Whenever we run on the road, we are running in people’s neighborhoods. We need to respect that as you would expect that in your neighborhood.

Please run along the side of the road to allow locals to pass by easily. Run facing oncoming traffic for safety.

Most importantly, DON’T LITTER! We want to leave this farm land as clean and pristine as we found it.

See you all on Saturday morning in Oakdale. If you show up at the park, it will be a very lonely 18 mile run.
