Modesto Marathon Winner in 2011 and ultrarunner, Jon Olsen, was named the Ted Corbitt Memorial Ultra Runner of the Year by USA Track & Field. This recognizes his performances throughout 2013 including the gold medal at the IAU 24-hour World Championships in The Netherlands, amassing 167.568 miles in 24 hours and his absolute 100-mile American record of 11 hours, 59 minutes, 28 seconds. Olsen is a math teacher at Prescott Junior High School right here in Modesto. Last Friday, January 11th , he spoke at the Modesto Sportsman of Stanislaus club and eloquently conveyed the highs, lows and mental gymnastics that ultra runners go through to achieve incredible performances.

Modesto Marathon organizers hope that warmer weather will be here for the marathon. But seriously, while most of the country is suffering from a cold snap, Modesto is having a typical California winter and by the time the event arrives on March 23rd we are confident that we will have perfect weather for a PR on this fast course.

captivatingphotosJust a reminder of one of the perks we provide or runners and walkers. Captivating Sports and Events Photos will be on hand at the 2014 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon to photograph you and your friends.

They will have a booth at the finish line where you can find and take your prints with you, or you can wait until you get home and download any or all of your images for FREE! Yes, free. We are picking up the tab.

So don’t be afraid to ham it up when you see a photographer and be sure to pose with your medal at the finish line.

Being fast will pay off at the 2014 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. We’ve expanded our purse to pay three deep in both the men’s and women’s races. First place in the marathon will pay $500, with $250 for second place and $100 for third. Half marathon winners will receive $250, $100 for second and $50 for third. The 5K will pay $100, $50 and $25.

In addition, we are offering bonuses for setting course records. A new marathon record earns $500, half marathon $250 and 5K $100.

We’ve altered our Boston Marathon contest as well. Everyone who qualifies for the Boston Marathon at the SAMM will be entered into a drawing for one of two $500 prizes (one for a male and one for a female), which may be used to help pay expenses toward their trip to Boston. You will not need to sign up at the Expo for this contest, although we encourage you to visit our In-Shape Health Clubs Pace Team booth to meet our pacers.

Those who BQ will also have their choice of a shirt or license plate frame (based on availability) boasting of their accomplishment. BQ prizes may be picked up at the awards booth at the finish line area following the race.
